A Q&A with stylist extraordinaire Shaye from On My Hand.

Photography by Danelle Bourgeois

Some people are such an inspiration that you wish you could channel their energy daily. I have never actually met the fabulous Shaye Woolford from On My Hand, but I am an avid follower of her work and hugely inspired by what she has achieved. This talented lady can style, manage, design, create, all while raising a family, and her passion for events and floral design (and her efficiency in answering my emails) mean she is one of the best in the business (and I am waiting patiently for her to teach a course in general awesomeness… I would sign up in a heart beat!)

On My Hand Props, Styling and Flora has grown an incredible amount in the past 3 years and I have no doubt that is because of Shaye’s determination, her huge amount of talent and her ability to truly connect with her clients. She is a one of a kind kick ass lady and so today we get to know her with a little Q&A and some pics of her amazing creations. Enjoy!

What’s the best professional lesson you ever learned?

You can’t do everything.  Choose wisely and it’s ok to say no.

What was the last thing that gave you warm fuzzies?

Getting a hand written note in the mail from a past bride.  Even got a bit teary.

Who inspires you?

Who doesn’t?  I find inspiration in a lot of people, but if I had to choose it would be my dad, my husband and my gal pal Sarah.

Describe your perfect day as a stylist…

For a wedding // the couple is happy.
For a shoot // perfect weather, flowers do as they’re told, lots of laughs, nail the shot.

Describe your perfect day off…

A sleep in!  As the kids would clearly be at their grandparents.  Then we’d pick them up, have a family picnic in the sun, swim in the ocean then meet some friends later for dinner and wines (on the way drop the kids back off at grandparents).

What is your favourite trend in the wedding world right now?

Probably the wild and loose florals, adding garlands, botanicals and fruit.  I love to play with different foliage and flowers, and anything goes now! I’d be happy if I never saw a completely white rose bouquet with beer grass ever again.

Looking back, what would you tell your 16 year old self?

Your life is what you make of it, stop being such a cow to your parents.

What is your favourite getaway location why?

A beach house anywhere in New Zealand.  So long as we’ve got the kids, a farmers market and a sunny deck.
